12 Characteristics of Being a Good Follower

Last week I wrote a blog about 7 Things to Avoid if You Want to Raise a Leader. So what is a key quality to develop in our kids so they can become an effective leader?

We train them to be good followers.

Just like Jesus did.

Jesus had his gang of twelve. Eleven of the twelve learned what it meant to be a good follower.

Those original eleven were able to go forth and be leaders who trained leaders.

So...what do we learn from Jesus and his followers?

1. They were all in.
So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. Luke 5:11

2. They followed directions.
Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.
But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
Luke 5:5

3. They were self-starters and performed their task without being micro-managed.
When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. Luke 9:1-2

4. They had a student's attitude. They wanted to learn from their teacher.
One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“‘Father,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come.

Give us each day our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.” Luke 11:1-4

5. They respected Jesus' authority.
People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them.
When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to him and said,
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child
will never enter it.” Luke 18:15-17

6. They were reliable.
“Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you,
‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
They replied, “The Lord needs it.” Luke 19:30-34

7. They were willing to ask questions.
Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?” Luke 12:41

8. They asked for what they needed.
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” Luke 17:5

9. They accepted criticism, instruction,  and training.

They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Mark 9:33-35

10. They took risks.
Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost, ”they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.  Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Matthew 14:25-33

11. They learned from their mistakes.

Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.  The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. Luke 22:60-62

12. They mentored others.
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20

To be an effective leader, being an effective--not perfect-- follower comes first.

One Leaf, No Foolin'

One leaf makes the difference between life and death of the mangrove tree. You could miss the few yellow leaves scattered among all the green leaves in the grove. But our captain made certain to point them out.

My daughter, Courtney, and I went on an EcoCruise while on a family vacation in the Florida Keys this past January. We saw lots of different birds, plants, and a few crabs. But the thing that made the biggest impact was the smallest thing we saw.

The yellow leaf.

According to the guide, the leaf soaks up all the salt water the plant's roots take in. In doing so the rest of the tree can survive- even thrive. But ... the result is the yellow leaf itself, dies.

The leaf's sole purpose  is to die so the rest of the tree can live.

Its name: The Sacrificial Leaf.

(You know where I'm heading with this!) Today, I am thanking God for the sacrifice His Son made for me while he hung on a tree. He sucked up all my salty sin and gave me living water. He gave his life so I could survive- no...thrive. He did it for me, for my family, and for you.

His name: Jesus.

Since that first Easter Morning- every day that follows-is a resurrection day. I am grateful. Because he died for me,  I will live for Him.

He is risen! He is risen indeed.

Look the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Easter Poem

Happy Easter. In keeping with my blog's tradition, I will be posting a poem by my dad, Robert Appel, his pen name was Rockman. Miss you, Pops.

Dear Jesus

At once both shepherd an the lamb
I lost you on good Friday
How could I know our Father's plan
My firm foundation turn to clay.

Left behind in deepest sorrow
I look upon that Calvary hill
What worth is there in my tomorrows
My cup no longer would you fill.

Then beyond all that I can understand
You changed my sorrow into joy
With life and death at your command
My Rock they could not destroy.

Now by Thy wonders Easter morn
We understand and share together
That death is not a crown of thorns
But new life to live forever.

Amen.

Christmas Love

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.
 Luke 2:14

Mary heard the shepherds account of the angels regarding the birth of Jesus and she "treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." Mary, a mom, remembered and cherished these moments.
The middle candle on the Advent wreath, the LOVE candle, reminds us of Jesus.

This week, make a pact with your family to treasure and ponder Jesus.

Bring Jesus into your home through your conversation and actions. Be blessed... because you are! Be a blessing...because you can! Glory to God in the highest. Amen and Amen.

How did you include Jesus in Christmas? How do you plan to  keep Christmas love, joy, hope, and faith alive throughout 2013?

Christmas Bread

Joy is the fourth candle on the Advent Wreath.
Make a pact with your family to be joyFILLed this week.
Jesus is coming!

Now we break this bread together
Lord be with us here today
Make our lives your home forever
In Jesus name we pray.

Thank you for all you've given us
and on this special night
We share the gift of your son Jesus
Truly born in love's pure light.

Such a gift beyond all knowing
We are humbled in His sight
To live our lives like candles glowing
Our purpose to reflect His light.

So now we start but without merit
Lord please show us the way
Grant us your grace so we inherit
Christ, our bread, on Christmas day.
Amen.

Don't Drink the Water

Well...you don't have to tell me twice. Actually you don't have to tell me once. Seriously, who would drink toilet water? Okay... besides Murphy (my dog).

Like a splash in the face, it hit me. I do. I drink toilet water. I pour all kinds of tainted things into my heart and mind. My thoughts, the things I view, or what I listen to can be poisonous.

Why do I do this?

I am a sinner.

But...I am a saved sinner. There is hope for me. God has given me the power to turn from sin, to run from it. I just need to tap into His Holy Spirit power, drink it in, and let it flow through my veins.

On my own, I'm parched, dying but His Spirit is the life-giving, pure water-waiting to be consumed.

I pray my children will drink living water.

The college years are filled with toilet water, beckoning the kids to take a sip, next a gulp, then consume a gallon, finally it is their beverage of choice. They can't even taste the poison. (This can make a parent sick, heart-sick.)

If you find yourself in this position of hurting due to your young adults choice of beverage,

PRAY.

My prayer for my kids is any activity that does not honor the Lord leaves them thirsty. I pray they desire clean water. I pray that only Jesus can can quench that thirst.

The enemy may have won the battle but he hasn't won the war.

Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.
John 4:14

The Lie

It is better to deal with dirt and grime immediately rather than later. Don't you agree? I find waiting means tougher scrubbing, built up scum, and possible stains.

Life is like that, too. Dealing with our mistakes or sins or dealing with our children's mistakes or sins should occur sooner rather than later. The mess is  contained, easier to address.

There are times we may want to look away, not tackle the issues at hand.

Denial, lack of time, fear... all play a possible role in avoiding a problem.

I love how Jesus dealt with the woman at the well (John 4). He went out of his way to speak with her, met her where she was, demonstrated love and concern, and spoke truth. He timed it perfectly. He talked with her privately. No one else was within earshot. What a tender moment.

This is a tough thing to do, to love by showing mercy and grace while speaking truth. But that is what our kids need and frankly that is what we (by we... I mean I) need.

Our kids need us to take the time and to be brave. They need us to treat them respectfully during a hard conversation. If issues, big or small, are dealt with in truth and love there is a better chance of altered behavior and character growth. This approach will keep the relationship intact.

Don't listen to the enemy's lie, "If you address this problem you will lose your child."

PRAY.

Pray for your child's faith to blossom. Just as with the woman at the well, this is the main focus.

Then follow Jesus's example. Be truthful and loving in the midst of a challenge. And ...remember to be respectful so the relationship isn't damaged.

...keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.
1 Timothy 3:9

Monday, September 24, 2012

Readers,
This month has been dedicated to enlightenment. Forward thinking in a sense. How to handle possible conflicts with teachers, realizing kids (and parents) are not perfect, and hanging onto good memories while moving ahead in life. We understand kids aren't perfect- at home or in school. And life still goes on..perfectly imperfect.
Next month we will look at Spiritual Warfare and how that relates to parenting.
For today I'm sharing a short prayer written by my dad. His birthday is at the beginning of October and it seems fitting to close out September with some of his words.

Dear Jesus:
Thank you for giving us the gift of people who have...
...reflected your light,
...influenced our lives, and
... helped us in our journey.
Please grant us your grace so that we may walk in your way and be a witness for Thee.
Amen
